Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) got married Saturday in Newton, Mass., to his partner Jim Ready, sealing a relationship that has worked wonders on Frank’s notoriously cranky personality. Frank, 72, is known for sharp words and sharp elbows, even with fellow Democrats and supporters.

But the love of a good man appears to have turned Frank into that other Barney: the big purple dinosaur who sings “I love you, you love me, we’re a happy family.”

Frank and Ready, 42, met in 2007, and the younger man’s influence on the representative has been observed by Capitol Hill colleagues. According to the New York Times, one House Republican said after seeing Ready in the hallway, “I should’ve known you were here. Barney was nice to me today.”

In 1987, Frank came out of the closet. He was the first openly gay representative in Congress – at a time when few people could imagine electing an openly gay official – and now he is the first to wed a same-sex partner. Frank, who is retiring from Congress, is a trailblazer who deserves a measure of domestic bliss in his golden years.

Gay or straight, the same truth holds: All you need is love. Frank found it, and paved the way for others to find it, too.
